Indigenous Games
Sport The East London Museum’s Indigenous Games Exhibition, funded by the Department of Recreation Art and Culture, opened on 17 March 2011 at the East London Museum. It was attended by between 80 and 90 guests and featured active game demonstrations by local school children.
Visitors to the East London Museum can learn about the nationally recognised games, including Iintonga, Morabaraba, Upuca, Kho-Kho, Dibeke, Jukskei, Ugqaphu, Ncuva, and other games.
As part of the interactive display, the board games and miniature Jukskei can be played. (There is a miniature Jukskei box with miniature skeis which enables the public to get a feel for the game.)
The exhibition is open till January 2012. Thereafter, components of the exhibit are planned to form part of the museum’s travelling outreach programme in 2012.
