Dolos

The Dolos was designed in 1963 in East London, under the direction of Eric Merrifield, Harbour Engineer. This unusually-shaped concrete block, weighing up to 20 tons, is used around the world to protect harbour walls, breakwaters and shore earthworks. It is also used to bind sea-sand to prevent erosion. Approximatley 10 000 dolosse are required per kilometre of coastline.

The East London Harbour is the only natural river harbour in South Africa.
